Traveling With THCP: Cars, Planes, State Lines, and What’s Allowed

A THCP product that’s legal in your state can become an illegal one the moment you cross a state line — and a perfectly legal domestic trip can become a federal problem at the wrong border. Here’s the travel framework, by scenario.

The Core Rule: Legality Is a Destination Question

THCP’s legality is determined by the law of the jurisdiction you’re in, at every point along the route. A gummy jar legal in State A, transported through State B (a ban state), and consumed in State A is still in State B while you’re there — including on its highways. Practical consequence: route around ban states, or don’t carry across them. The state map is the planning tool; check every jurisdiction on your route, not just the endpoints.

By Scenario

Scenario Rule of thumb
Intra-state (legal state, no lines crossed) Generally fine; keep it sealed, in your bag, labeled
Across a state line Check every jurisdiction on the route; ban states = don’t carry through
Domestic flight Carry-on only (the battery-in-product rule); legality is your problem, not TSA’s — TSA reports suspected cannabis to local law enforcement
Rentals / rideshares Same as personal vehicles: you’re a carrier in every jurisdiction you enter
Canada (either direction) Do not. Cannabis product import/export is a federal matter in Canada with no hemp-channel exception: the Canada explainer
International No. Different country = different drug laws, full stop

The Practical Checklist

  1. Map the route against the state map — every state you’ll be in, including overnight stops.
  2. Keep product sealed, labeled, in its original packaging. Original packaging carries the batch code and COA reference (lab reports); unsealed product in a bag is how “hemp gummies” become a bad conversation.
  3. Carry-on for air travel. If your product contains a battery component (vapes), it must be carry-on per airline/lithium rules regardless of content. Vape devices: no checked bags, ever.
  4. Know the destination’s rules before you pack — including hotel policies (many prohibit cannabis product on premises) and event venues.
  5. Drive accordingly. Zero driving under the influence for the full duration window of your format (duration guide) — an impairment stop in a ban state is two problems at once.

If You’re Stopped

  • Be calm, be factual, know your destination state’s law before you roll through it. “It’s legal where I live” is not a defense in a jurisdiction where it isn’t.
  • For any question about a specific route or situation, support will walk you through it — and the terms of service state our position on restricted jurisdictions plainly.
