Walk into any cannabinoid shop and you’ll see three names on every shelf: THC, delta-8, and THCP. They all come from cannabis and all hit the same receptors — but they’re not the same experience. Here’s the honest comparison.
The Chemistry in 60 Seconds
- Delta-9 THC — the classic psychoactive cannabinoid, the reason marijuana is marijuana. Illegal federally above 0.3%.
- Delta-8 THC — a THC isomer, milder, produced from hemp CBDA. Legal in some states, banned in others.
- THCP — a rarer isomer with a longer side chain that binds CB1 receptors more strongly. Early research suggests up to 30x the binding affinity of delta-9 — which is why even small doses feel potent.
How the Effects Compare
| Delta-9 THC | Delta-8 | THCP | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intensity | High | Mild–moderate | High (at lower mg) |
| Duration | 2–4h | 2–5h | 3–8h (format dependent) |
| Typical starting dose | 5–10mg | 10–25mg | 1–5mg (vape) / 250mg+ (edible mg claims vary) |
Legality: The Part That Actually Affects Your Order
This is where buyers get burned. Delta-8 is banned in a dozen-plus states (including New York, New Mexico, and South Dakota) and restricted in more. THCP’s status is a moving target: legal under the federal Farm Act as a hemp derivative, but state legislatures keep adding it to restriction lists. Delta-9 remains federally illegal except where states have legalized it.
Before you buy anything, run your state through our state legality guide — it’s updated as rules change, and our shipping policy explains what happens if a state drops out.
Which Should You Try?
- Want the mildest entry point: delta-8, where legal.
- Want potency with a modern legal framework: THCP — that’s what the entire Flying Horse lineup is built on.
- Where delta-9 is legal: state-licensed dispensary product, obviously.
Whichever cannabinoid you choose, buy lab-tested — every Flying Horse batch has published results on the lab reports page, and our guide to why third-party testing matters explains how to read them.
